Gerald Bunney of Aladdin, said the ingredients of a successful run at the Kaycee Challenge Sheep Dog Trial are: “Good dog, good sheep and a little luck; maybe a lot of luck.”

Bunney had all of the above, as he won the trial over Labor Day weekend.

Bunney has competed at the Kaycee Sheep Dog Trial since its start. He won the top award two years ago as well.

On Sunday, his sheep dog, Ladd, missed one set of panels and faced some resistance from the ewes.

“I had that one high-headed ewe. It was all right. It could have been a lot worse,” he said.

Bud Boudreau of Sheffield, Texas, faced some tough ewes as well.

“This is the testing grounds for our breeding stock, a good, tough trial like this,” he said.

“We’re looking for a dog that can move them without biting them,” Boudreau said. “We love it here. These are the toughest sheep in the country.”

The Kaycee Sheep Industry Festival & Kaycee Challenge Sheep Dog Trial brought every kind of weather imaginable, from 100-degree heat on Saturday to a chilly Sunday and torrential downpours right after the awards were handed out Monday afternoon.

A farm manager from Northumberland, England, Bevis Jordan

officiated over the trial.
