Bison swim team overcomes lack of depth in stellar performance

Bison swimmer Wilbur Holt warms up for a home dual meet against Sublette County last Friday. Despite having a squad of nearly half the size, Buffalo made a valiant effort before dropping the contest 76-80.

The numbers were stacked against them, but the Bison swim team refused to back down.

Matching six swimmers against Sublette County’s 14, Buffalo gave the visiting team a run for its money in last Friday’s dual meet.

Although the team would come up short with a 76-80 loss, head coach Ron Chapin was pleased with the performance.

“We swam really well against Sublette County winning eight of 12 events,” he said. “Sublette just had more depth. They were able to score two relays to our one and they had a diver.”

Kevin Kramer took home first in the 200-yard IM while Caleb Dillinger had a personal best in the 50-yard freestyle.

“Joseph Kelly also had a good meet,” noted Chapin. “He swam the 200-yard freestyle for the first time and he looked really smooth in the water.”

On Saturday the team competed in the Douglas Invitational and Chapin noticed that the fatigue from Friday night’s match-up plagued the boys throughout.

“We finished in third place behind Sublette County and Douglas but we looked tired in this meet,” he said. “I could tell the effort was there but the guys weren’t going anywhere. In the 200-yard medley relay, I thought we had a good chance to win but Douglas put together a great effort and beat us. We finished second in all three relays.”

Notable performers included Wilbur Holt who took first in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke, Caleb Cohoon who won the 100-yard breaststroke, and Kevin Kramer who garnered first place in the 50-yard freestyle.

“Wilbur kept the lead the whole race in the 200-yard free and then out-sprinted his opponent in the end,” Chapin remarked. “Kramer blew his competition away in the 50-yard sprint winning by over three seconds and Cohoon is one of the top breaststrokers in the state. I couldn’t ask for a better group of guys.”
