Arvada-Clearmont students shine at science fair

Story by Brendan Carl, brendan@buffalobulletin.com

Arvada-Clearmont High School was well represented at the Northeast District Science Fair in Newcastle recently. Three of the projects generated placed in the top three and will be a part of the Wyoming State Science Fair on March 4-6 in Laramie.

Kaley Liberty Riley placed first in the environmental science category with her project, “Testing the Waters.” The project compared Dactylis globerata (cat grass) growth when watered with several different methane well and compressor station water samples.

Zac Gibbs and Dylan Collins placed second in environmental science category with a project entitled “Impractical Irrigation.” The students studied and compared bean biomass production with flood, sprinkler and sub irrigation.

Linzee Adamson placed third in microbiology with a project called “Eww, Is That True?” She focused on the bacteria found on cell phones even after being cleaned with a Clorox wipe.

The students came up with the projects on their own and worked on them for a month before the district fair on Feb. 1 in Newcastle.

“I am very proud of the efforts of students who participated in an activity that required time and effort beyond the normal school day,” said science teacher Mona Mitzel. “A good science project requires attention to detail and disciplined work to accomplish.”

The fair consisted of 79 projects from three different schools in the district. Categories consisted of visual display, skill, thoroughness, scientific thought and creative ability. Only the top three places in each category advanced to the state level.

At the Junior High School Science Fair in Sheridan, Arvada-Clearmont’s team placed first in the behavioral and social science category.

The project by Taylor Burtenshaw and Kylar Klaahsen analyzed data to see if girls who play video games score higher on spatial math problems than girls who do not play video games.
