Former Buffalo principal Craig Kitto died after suffering critical injuries in an avalanche near Bozeman, Montana on Sunday.
In an email to district families on Monday, Johnson County School administrators wrote, "It is with a heavy heart that we share with you the passing of Mr. Craig Kitto, former Johnson County School employee and Buffalo community member. Mr. Kitto was snowboarding in the mountains near his home in Bozeman, Montana, yesterday, Feb. 14, when he was tragically caught in an avalanche."
Kitto was principal of Whittier Elementary School in Bozeman at the time of his death. According to Johnson County School District, prior to accepting the job in Bozeman, Kitto served as associate principal at Buffalo High School from 2007-2013 and then as principal at Meadowlark Elementary from 2013-2018.
According to the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center, Kitto and another splitboarder were going up the slope of the basin when they felt the snow on the slope collapse and saw cracks forming underneath them. One of the splitboarders grabbed a tree. Kitto was carried downslope into a tree and was partially buried with critical injuries.
