John R. Tobi

Jan. 5, 1929 – April 3, 2021

John R. Tobi of Buffalo passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, April 3, 2021 at the Amie Holt Care Center, in Buffalo. He was 92 years old.

Born in Mt. Vernon, New York on Jan. 5, 1929 to Robert and Irma Tobi, John spent his early years playing ball in the streets with his brother and friends. He dreamed of hunting and fishing in the “Big North Woods” and when he reached the age of 18, he started taking the train to northern Maine whenever he could. This started a lifetime pursuit of finned and furred creatures. He graduated with honors from Wesleyan University in 1952. Upon graduation, he served in the Navy as an officer aboard the USS Fiske, a destroyer. He served from 1952 to 1956 and remained in the Naval Reserves until 1967. After 40 years working for IBM, he retired to Buffalo in 1999.

John enjoyed annual salmon fishing trips to East Grand Lake in Maine and elk hunting trips to a family cabin in the Absaroka Range in Wyoming, where his love of cooking earned him the title “camp cook.”

John married Elizabeth Ann Melloon in 1959 and they had two sons, who they raised in Weston, Connecticut. He is predeceased by his brother Robert “Robbie” Tobi. He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth and his two sons, Donald (wife Barbara) of Underhill, Vermont and Steven (wife Patty) of Sheridan, as well as a sister-in-law, Mary Tobi of Bayport, New York, and his nieces Susan Melloon and Sandra Bruhn and their spouses. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Jaclyn, Jacob, Harrison and Emily, all residing in Vermont.

Burial will be in a family plot in Concord, Massachusetts later this year.
