Joan Marie Kostenbaur Herzog was born on Sept. 4, 1933 in Riverton to Fred and Carma Kostenbauer. She was the first of three children. The family traveled around the Western states while Fred worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps during World War II. They then returned to Buffalo where her dad worked in a coal mine with his brother Willie. She graduated from Johnson County High School in 1951. She then attended a year of college in Riverside, California. She was married on Dec. 27, 1952 in Buffalo to Robert Herzog and they made their home in Buffalo. In 1961 they moved with Bob’s work to Rawlins. In 1967 they were again transferred to Basin, where they lived for 30 years. Joan worked as a secretary for the Basin High School for seven years and later worked in the Big Horn County Treasurer’s Office for several years. In 1998 they moved back to Buffalo where they began renovation of the Campbell family home on Gatchell Street. After retirement she and Robert traveled around the country and enjoyed many sights. They were married for 69 years and had three children Robynn, Tom and Larry. Robert and Joan continued living in Buffalo until her death.
Joan loved to read, play bridge, do jigsaw puzzles and spend time with her family. She especially enjoyed being at the family cabin in the Bighorn Mountains. Joan and Robert would live there in the summer months and spend other holidays there with family as well. She was so proud of all her children and grandchildren’s accomplishments.
She is survived by her husband Robert Herzog of Buffalo; one daughter Robynn Terry of Basin; one son Larry Herzog and his wife Shannon of Buffalo; one brother Ron Kostenbauer and his wife Bonnie of Camarillo, California; grandsons, Nick Terry of Colstrip, Montana and Matt Terry of Basin; grandaughter Nicole Herzog-Adams and her husband Jesse of Denver; grandson Paul Herzog and his wife Nicole of San Diego; great-grandsons Dante, Mikah Terry; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
